My love for earrings started long before made by Kira came about.  At the age of 10 I made my first pair of earrings using a couple of chicken chip packets I had shrunk in the oven and attached to my sleepers. This was the only way I could have anything pretty or funky hanging from my lobes as I had horrendous allergic reactions to anything that wasn’t surgical-steel. I couldn’t even wear studs for more than a few hours. It seems silly now, but I just wanted to be like the other girls and have fun earrings.

One day while scrolling through a favourite online clothing store looking for that perfect item to tip me over into the free shipping category, I came across a stunning pair of bright blue dangles. They were beautiful and just my colour. But if you’re like me and suffer from sensitive ears you know the pain and discomfort caused by inferior metals and so I decided not to buy the earrings. I paid the shipping expense as a possible reaction just wasn’t worth it.  I needed to be able to trust that the earrings I was putting in my ears were safe and all those feelings of once again missing out on having the nice fun earring resurfaced.

That was the moment I decided to make my own earrings. I knew that if I could source the stainless surgical-steel posts then whatever I made, I could safely wear. I’d heard about how light polymer clay was and decided that was what I was going to make my earrings with. Not only did they need to be safe for sensitive ears, but also lightweight so they could be worn all day without the heavy pulling on the earlobe.

This is how Made by Kira was formed. It became my mission to create beautiful, lightweight, hypoallergenic pieces to be worn all day, on and occasion, using quality materials sourced from other small Australia businesses.

I like to think of it as a little dose of dopamine dressing -choosing colours, textures and styles that lift your mood and make you feel more like you. It brings me so much joy knowing that something as simple as a pair of my earrings can spark that kind of happiness and confidence in the women who wear them.
